A Hypothetical Mechanism of Carbon Black Formation based on Molecular Ballistic Deposition

Motivated by recent experimental investigations of carbon black surface roughness and several new results emphasising the role of fullerene like precursor structures in carbon black formation, a first attempt for modelling the nucleation and surface growth mechanisms during furnace black processing is presented. It is shown that the experimentally detected universal surface morphology independent of grade number can be explained on the one side by numerical simulations of molecular ballistic deposition models and on the other side by the anisotropic KPZ equation. A particular solution of this equation, i. e. a circular shaped and pyramidal layered Toom interface, compares fairly well to the morphology obtained from TEM images of carbon black on nanoscopic length scales.

Ein hypothetischer Mechanismus der Rußbildung auf der Basis molekular-ballistischer Depositionsmodelle
Motiviert durch aktuelle experimentelle Untersuchungen der Oberflächenrauheit von Rußen und neuere Ergebnisse zur Bedeutung von fullerenartigen Vorläuferstrukturen bei der Rußbildung wird ein erster Versuch zur Modellierung von Kernbildungs- und Oberflächenwachstumsprozessen bei der Herstellung von Furnacerußen vorgestellt. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich die experimentell gefundene universelle Oberflächenmorphologie unabhängig vom Rußtyp zum einen durch numerische Simulation von molekular-ballistischen Depositionsmodellen und zum anderen durch die anisotrope KPZ-Gleichung erklären lässt. Eine spezielle Lösung dieser Gleichung in Form einer zirkularen, pyramidal geschichteten Toom-Oberfläche zeigt vergleichbare Strukturen wie sie auch bei TEM-Aufnahmen von Rußen auf nanoskopischer Längenskala gefunden werden.
