The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT is developing innovative and flexible plastic compounds for thermoplatic-based bipolar plates, which, with a material thickness of 0.5 millimeters, are 5 to 10 times thinner than previous plates measuring 3 to 4 millimeters. The plates are manufactured using the ‘roll-to-roll’ process for the first time. To enable this, the manufacturing process established in the plastics industry was adapted for the specific materials. The plastic material selected was olefinic thermoplastic elastomer (TPE-O, TPO), with only 20 percent plastic with thermal properties, 80 percent graphite, and small amounts of carbon black being processed. The sophisticated and careful temperature control of the plastics in the production process also enables the bipolar plates to be formed and even welded later on.
