Development of an Extrusion for the Continuous Pre-Cross-Linking of Solid Silicone Rubber

April 27. 2017 - The blow molding of solid silicone rubbers is possible with a defined pre-cross-linking of the material. The pre-cross-linking allows the extrusion of the parison without strong drawdown and the forming with compressed air into a hollow body. The objective of this contribution is the development of an extrusion die for the continuous pre-cross-linking of silicone rubber. For the design of the flow channel, the complex influence of the increasing temperature and the simultaneous pre-cross-linking on the rheological material behaviour are determined by measurements with HCR, RPA and rotational rheometer. It is found that the pre-cross-linking may lead to flow instabilities, such as wall sliding and melt fracture.
