Extrusion is widely used to precisely manufacture various rubber products, where the dimensional accuracy largely depends upon the die swell phenomena. The die swell is influenced by the rheology of the material involved.
The extrusion process is used to precisely fabricate elongated polymer components, such as automotive rubber products, tubes, hoses, window seals, tyre components, and various other rubberbased goods. Around 60% components of a typical passenger car radial tyre are fabricated using the extrusion process and the percentage is higher for larger size tyres. The performance and quality of the tyre largely depend upon the dimensional accuracy of the extruded product. Processing complications, surface defects and die swell are the few common difficulties involved in the extrusion process. The die swell largely depends upon the rheological properties of the material.
