By way of comparison to the mineral oils conventionally used (TDAE and MES), chemically modified vegetable oils were employed as plasticizers in NR and s-SBR and as compatibilizers in the blend system.

Plasticizers are low-viscosity substances. They interact with the rubber to which they are admixed to influence properties like ductility, processability and low-tem perature flexibility.[1] A reduction in viscosity during the blending process makes it possible to save energy and optimize filler distribution in the rubber compound.[2] Plasticizers also have an impact on rubber polarity, allowing for improved blend miscibility. This means that they can be used as compatibilizers.
