Recycling Waste Tyres: From Landfill to Useful Products through Devulcanization
The rapid growth of the automotive industry and the resulting accumulation of waste tyres pose significant environmental and public health concerns world wide. This study explores innovative and sustainable waste tyre management strategies, reviewing conventional methods like landfilling, retreading, and energy recovery, as well as advanced thermo-chemical techniques such as pyrolysis, gasification, and liquefaction.
Enormous amounts of used tyre waste from the automotive industry have been emerging to be an important concern as it contributes to almost 80% of the rubber waste produced in the whole world [1].Poor waste management along with the application of old conventional recycling techniques has raised a massive challenge for researchers and scientists. However, the presence of important hydrocarbons in the waste tyre rubber makes it highly prudent for its regeneration and further use [2].
